Salted Caramel Buttercream (Halved Recipe)

This smooth, sweet, and slightly salty buttercream is perfect for cookies, cupcakes, or cakes.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup salted butter, softened
  • 2 ½ tablespoons caramel sauce
  • 2–3 cups powdered sugar
  • Dash of milk or heavy cream (only if frosting is too thick)

Instructions

  1. Beat the butter:

In a large bowl, use a mixer to beat the softened butter on medium speed until it becomes light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).

  1. Mix in caramel

Add the caramel sauce. Continue mixing until fully combined.

  1. Incorporate powdered sugar:

Gradually add the powdered sugar, starting with 2 cups. Beat well after each addition. If a thicker frosting is desired, add more powdered sugar up to 3 cups total.

  1. Adjust consistency:

If the frosting becomes too thick, add a small dash of milk or heavy cream and mix until smooth and spreadable.

  1. Taste and finalize:

Taste the frosting and adjust the salt or caramel to your liking.

  1. Optional finishing touch:

Once applied to your dessert, sprinkle coarse salt on top for extra flavor and texture.

Yield

  • Cookies: Frosts about 12–15 medium cookies.
  • Cupcakes: Frosts about 12 cupcakes.
  • Cake: Frosts a single-layer 8-inch cake.
